When buying fresh cherries, look for deep red fruit that is uniform in colour and free of nicks, bruises, and other blemishes. Six whole cherries yield approximately four ounces grate.
Wash, cut, and pit the cherries
To remove bacteria, wash cherries in a solution of three parts water and one part white vinegar. Washing with cool flowing water but rather pat dry. Mash or Grind The Slice
In a food processor or blender, grind until smooth. As needed, add water to achieve the desired consistency.
Instead of pureeing the cherries, mash them with a potato masher for a chunkier grind suitable for babies aged 10 months and up.
If The Cherries are Underripe or Frozen, Steam Them
If your cherries are ripe, skip to step 4 and continue. If you’re working with unripe or frozen cherries, place them in a steamer and steam for three minutes to help preserve vitamins and minerals. To stop the cooking process, drain the cherries and rinse with cold water for three minutes.
Keep Any Leftover Cherry Grind
Cool the cherry grind (if you steamed the cherries) and store leftovers in BPA-free containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Leftovers can be frozen for up to 3 months. Refreeze in the fridge or freezer.
Always consult your paediatrician before introducing a new food to your baby, especially if your baby has food allergies. Furthermore, some paediatricians advise against making your own carrot, beet, or spinach grind because these fresh vegetables can be higher in nitrates.
