In the comfort of your own home, make a spicy crispy chicken sandwich!
My ultimate obsession has always a good fried chicken sandwich.
Popeyes, Chick-fil-A, and KFC are all well-known for their iconic spicy crispy chicken sandwiches, which are typically my go-to takeout option.
As much as it’s one of my favorite foods, I’ve finally cracked the code to make the best buttermilk fried chicken sandwich in the comfort of your own home after countless sessions.
Each piece of chicken loaded with incredible flavor that will satisfy all of your fried chicken cravings and only requires a handful of ingredients to make.
Popeyes but instead KFC inspired this fried chicken hamburger recipe, where it combines the buttery brioche and juicy chicken from Popeyes with the irresistibly delicious spicy mayo sauce and fresh vegetables from the KFC Zinger burger.
It calls for a simple two-step process in which the chicken soaked in a buttermilk marinade before dredged in a flavorful flour mixture. The succulent chicken pieces then ready to deep-fried until golden and assembled into the perfect bite of your sandwich.
The marinade and flour mixture comes together in seconds with simple pantry ingredients, and all the “effort” required is to resist temptation and wait for the chicken to marinate for a few hours, preferably overnight.
Although it takes a little time, letting the chicken marinate overnight makes a huge difference, so I highly recommend doing it ahead of time! I can assure you, however, that the wait will be well worth it.
What ingredients will I need to make a spicy crispy chicken sandwich
This crispy chicken sandwich recipe not only requires a simple two-step process, but also simple ingredients that are likely to be found in your kitchen.
The following ingredients will be required to marinate the chicken
Boneless skinless chicken thighs
I recommend using larger pieces without trimming the fat to make the chicken extra juicy and tender.
For this sandwich, I prefer chicken thighs over chicken breasts because they have a delicious melt-in-your-mouth texture, but take a moment to use chicken breasts if you tend to favour a denser, that much meaty texture.
A cup of buttermilk
This is an essential ingredient for tenderizing and flavoring the meat.
Buttermilk is widely available in grocery stores, but if you can’t find it, combine a cup of whole milk with 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice.
Stir together these ingredients and set aside for 10-15 minutes. Its milk will slightly overcook, giving it a flavour and aroma.
A chicken stock aroma and texture
To flavor the buttermilk, combine Sriracha, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
And for that special moment when you’re putting together your buttermilk fried chicken sandwich:
To be dredged in
flour, cornstarch, paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne powder. If you want a less spicy version, leave out or reduce the cayenne powder.
To make the burger sauce, combine Sriracha and mayonnaise.
Brioche buns: toasted lightly with butter. I highly suggest using brioche because it truly adds that supreme touch that your delicious taste deserve.
Toppings of your choice For this recipe, I used sliced pickles, tomato, and lettuce, but feel free to substitute your favorite ingredients!
Cooking oil, of course, for frying the chicken! I recommend that you use a deep fryer or a deep frying pan to avoid overcrowding and to prevent oil splatters
This buttermilk fried chicken sandwich recipe has a simple method, but there are a few key tips to truly elevate your sandwich.
Here are some cooking tips to help you out
For best results, simmer the chicken instantly!
This will bring out the most flavor in your chicken and tenderize the meat, giving it that wonderful melt-in-your-mouth texture. If you don’t have much time, marinate the chicken in the buttermilk mixture for at least 4 hours.
Some of the buttermilk marinade should be mixed into the flour mixture.
To make the extra-crunchy pieces for the coating, I add about 2 tablespoons of the mixture and whisk it in with a fork. Activate theFirmly press the flour mixture onto both sides of the chicken to ensure a well-coated surface.
Fry the chicken at 350°F until golden brown, flipping halfway through.
Depending on the size of the chicken, cook for 3-4 minutes on each side to perfection. The thickest part of the chicken should be 165°F (75°C) with a golden brown and crispy exterior.
I recommend frying one or two pieces at a time to keep the temperature stable throughout. To avoid splatter, I recommend frying in a deep frying pan.
Use your imagination when it comes to toppings.
Personally, I like to add a slice of tomato, garlic dill pickles, and lettuce, but the choice is entirely yours. You can’t go wrong with any of your favorite toppings!
Bread pudding, ciabatta, and more brioche!
Regular burger buns will suffice, but brioche buns in this spicy chicken sandwich recipe take it to the next level. The best fried chicken sandwich you can make at home is made with soft and buttery brioche with a hint of sweetness.
Before assembling the sandwich, toast it with a dab of butter. They are quite intricate, so be careful not to touch them!
